Miso makes
it Tasty
Add a spoon & see!
The Miso Tasty secret to enjoying miso in everyday cooking is "Add a spoon & see!".
You can enjoy cooking with miso with no recipes at all, once you have learnt our little trick.
Want a deeper flavour to finish your dish? Whether it’s a lasagne, spaghetti bolognese or Sunday's gravy, miso will make it mighty!
Below is our secret system for how the magic works!
Boost Your Base
Swap out the salt
Miso is a great replacement for salt - just a small teaspoon of miso to a dish will enhance flavours. It's lower in sodium than salt, so it’s a great swap!
A little goes a long way
If you are new to miso, start with white miso and add a small amount of miso at a time and taste. You don't need much, the key is to enhance your base flavour without making your dish taste distinctly miso. As you get used to adding miso, experiment with red miso too for a deeper taste.
Top Tip! Always thin the miso
Miso can be a little stubborn to dissolve into your sauces, so don’t just add it to thin sauces directly into the pot or pan, as miso can stay lumpy without whisking.
At Miso Tasty we recommend always taking out some of the sauce that you are adding the miso to in a small bowl, and mix the miso in to create a smooth thin paste before pouring it back into the dish to melt into your other tasty flavours.
Pick Your Base Flavour
Miso makes tomatoes Tasty
It might be hard to imagine, but once you've tried it, you won't go back!
Miso brings out the sweetness of tomatoes, smooths the acidity and adds a slow-roasted depth of flavour in an instant.
How much to add?
Simply add a teaspoon at a time to your dish, and taste. Roughly, we suggest a tablespoon of white or red miso for every can of tomatoes.

Miso & onion,
a match in heaven
So many recipes start with onions and garlic - a gentle sautee of onions to start your pasta, stews and pie bases. Think Shepherd's Pie, a bean chilli, a soup, an onion gravy...
Miso adds a deep, caramelised flavour to onions, especially red onions. It brings a rich 'meaty' depth that tastes like it’s been gently cooked for hours.
HOW MUCH TO ADD?
Simply add a teaspoon at a time to your dish, and taste. Roughly, we suggest 1 tablespoon of red miso for every large cooked onion, but taste as you go and see what works for you!

If you love a strong cheese flavour, you MUST try adding a little miso to your mac and cheese, cheese on toast, risotto, pasta dishes and nachos.
Like cheese, miso is fermented so those sweet developed flavours just sing together in harmony. Miso brings out the sweetness in cheese but also the 'nutty' umami savoury flavours too. Adding miso tastes like you have added a lot more cheese than you did!
Cheese + Miso = Yes Please!
HOW MUCH TO ADD?
Simply add a teaspoon at a time to your dish, and taste. Roughly, we suggest a tablespoon of white miso for lighter cheese dishes per person/serving, or half a tablespoon of red miso per person if you are adding stronger tasting cheeses like parmesan or blue cheese.

It might seem unusual to add miso to sweet dishes, but if you like salted caramel then you are going to LOVE adding miso to your sweet treats.
Miso brings depth to caramel and chocolate flavours, balancing out the sweetness. It adds a fudgie richness that makes you go back for more!
Add miso to your chocolate brownies, your cookies, and our favourite - the banana bread! You won't be able to taste a strong miso flavour, just a depth and balance that makes it perfect!
Sweet miso?
It does make sense!
HOW MUCH TO ADD?
Simply add a tablespoon of white miso paste to your dessert recipe, whether that’s a loaf tin or baking tin, it’s very forgiving! Don't forget to 'thin' your miso before it goes into the batter, for a smooth lump-free bake.
Top Tip - for cookies, reduce to 1 teaspoon for your batch, as miso maintains a soft and moist bake, you may wish to have more of a crunch and crispness to your cookies!
