As with all nutritional information online, we encourage you to do thorough research before concluding on your stance on food ethics issues.
At Miso Tasty, all our soy-based products are tested for GMO so that you can be assured of its origins. Our Tofu is also organic and certified by the Soil Association. There has been a lot of scientific analysis and media attention on the health and ethics of eating soy-based foods, especially around the topics of GMO and on the impact on hormonal balance in humans. Many of the concerns are attributed to the isoflavones present in soybeans, which are a class of phytoestrogens that are similar to the oestrogen hormone.
The UK Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food Consumer Products and the Environment conducted an in-depth analysis of soya effects on human health (COT, 2003) and acknowledged there was no evidence that populations that regularly eat high levels of soya in their diets such as Chinese and Japanese have had a negative impact on their hormonal balance or related issues such as fertility. Nonetheless, soya remains a controversial topic for some groups, although the growing availability of organic non-GMO certified tofu in health food shops and in supermarkets has helped to overcome these preconceptions.
